The Year of Blood, Sweat, and Tears

“Third year was not easy for me, you have to manage your schedules productively for complete all works. It is a year full of responsibilities”

a senior in the faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication (BJM)

As the year of being junior has arrived, It is undeniable for me to say that all of the assignments were overloaded from various subjects, especially from the subject of JM 310 Editorial and Article Writing. The course is instructed the writing skill to be more creative and illustrative, corresponding to the descriptive name of ‘editorial’ and ‘article writing, than the last previous classes of ‘research report’. I struggled at first writing in a different manner of creative writing that I am not familiar with. But after a few works, the instinct of writing has derived from me. Not only the academic part that I had known, but I gained some friends that I have never talked to in three years. We work together and share teamwork efforts to our same project achievement goal.

There is also a well-known quote from an American author John C. Maxwell, “Teamwork makes dream work”, that can overall describe the experience that I have learned so far. At first, the worries had descended after I knew there would be an assigned group for everyone, as I see myself as an introverted person with unfamiliar people. It was difficult for me to work with someone I barely talked along with doing a project that required loads of responsibility. Luckily, we found a way to let everybody in the team take part in different roles, in which all members remarkably follow their chosen tasks. Line group is the main means for dividing roles for each member, along with several face-to-face meetings after classes. To be honest, the lecturer of this course Ajarn Bruce Avasadanon is the person who gave an impulse to a lot of students by his datelines and comments to do work. In which, the comments which he provided were truly effective for our assignments. For example, the follow-up presentation that every group needs to do weekly keeps the process to be running, which the received comments from the lecturer can be used to improve the quality of work even more.

I would say to the people who are interested in this course that it is a course of practical sessions, rather than theory classes. The assigned works offered me great opportunities both in classes and in the real field of journalists. Since our group did a topic of comparing censorship and freedom of expression between Thailand and Singapore, our interviewees that we selected were journalists and citizens in the two countries. For the interviewee part, our group was honored for being invited to the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand to interview a correspondent from CNA news Khun Saksith Saiyasombut. It was a whole incredible new experience that inspired our group from visiting his office to succeed in our article in the most paid effort manner.

I attained the skill of writing formal emails and coping with various online platforms to contact interviewees and our lecturers in the period of Covid-19. To avoid the infection, there are lots of complex procedures that we need to follow from the first day of learning. It was strict and strange to do at first, the masks and social distancing protocol. But, I cannot disagree with that method since the reasons that the lecturer provided, all the polls and charts that had been given in Haiku learning site.

After this semester’s classes, new knowledge and skills have been given to me as a student of the subject JM 310 Editorial and Article Writing. Even there were tiring days that I felt reluctant to finish the assigned work, but in the end, I think it is worth the blood, sweat, and tears that I have devoted. I change myself to become more solid in deadlines and work priorities. And at last, I would give credit to myself for not giving up, my team members who always cooperate and cheer up each other, and lastly to my lecturer Ajarn Bruce Avasadanon for advising many new techniques to improve our writing and develop ourselves. I am grateful to be one of Ajarn Bruce’s students in the subject of Editorial and Article Writing.
